If you did not wish for me to return the funds to the address from which they came, perhaps you might have considered saying something to this effect. To quote you directly:

I truly am sorry that you lost your bitcoins. However nothing that I have done in this case has demonstrated even the slightest bit of lack of trustworthiness. It is not as if I am able to derive any benefit from the bitcoins that are now stored on the private key that formerly belonged to you. Neither do I believe this demonstrates a lack of responsibility since, under the circumstances, my interpretation of your message was quite reasonable.
