Most of the stuff woodcollector did isn't 3d like the image smoothie posted.
It seems to be a fixed focal length, like for example the lion head on the coin.  its possible he used a few different lengths for
different parts of the same piece, but again, not really 3d like that. 

Like I said, it's possible.

I, as someone who owns both tools, would use a CNC machine for the wider stuff and a laser engrave for the finer details (like serifs).
The hardest part then would be ensuring everything matches up in orientation (which can be easily done by cutting the outside last on the CNC machine as squares are nice and easy to align).

But I'm crap with wood, which is why I have a CNC machine Tongue
