There is only one secure network, the Bitcoin network, and many experiments.
If people think they can do better than the Bitcoin protocol, then they can build a sidechain..

Actually you are incorrect, Litecoin and also Dogecoin are very secure networks. Not sure if you purposely left those out or merely forgot about them.
Speaking about experiments, interesting you say that since technically Bitcoin is still in beta
