Actually more like a safety function by Mother Nature. In groups of rats there is a known correlation between population density and behavioral anomalies. Humans can cope better with stress and unwanted social contacts but there are still a number of deflexions what eventually will lead to a decline in numbers. BTW if your naturally born competitors fu**ing each other instead of competing with you that's good for you . Isn't it ?
