So the bidders were buying for a group of people, this has happened before and was to be expected.
Part of the sum was immediately moved to Bitfinex - again nothing new, at least some of these people must be traders. With a sum this big you can make a ton of money even on small <$10 movements.

Hmm, is this confirmed? Does anyone know how much they paid per coin? Was it much below market rate? I dunno why they would buy just to immediately move to an exchange and sell on otherwise.

Wow that is ridiculous. I can understand them accepting other mediums of payment but not accepting bitcoin as one is treacherous. According to the link they only pay their staff members in PayPal as well.
