I would be happy to explain. Yes the dividend is based on your total investment. So if you bought 10,000 NXT worth and the dividend was 4.5 for the week 450 would automatically deposit into your account. The transactions can be done through the NXT client or a web-based client like Secure Asset Exchange. If you wish to cash in your dividends you can always click on the "Send NXT" button and send them to your favorite exchange where NXT is traded against BTC.
It is actually very simple once you have done it a few times.
