i don't like the layout of the site, very superficial look but my main issue is the amount of lag i encountered

You can change the bacgrounds as well mate we have quite a nice little selection going there if that will help
how to change the backgrounds i don't have such a fuction on my side to change the background theme?

I got mine change.. its all deep space objects for themes, love it, check on the top of there page you will see there is like a gear (Next to the small key) click on that and you will find "Select theme" have fun. Now can I get "Mod" status for this please?
