Revealing a “name” per se’ may, or may not be considered “Doxing” depending on the level of anticipated anonymity.   However, in this law, the term “restricted personal information” means, “with respect to an individual, the Social Security number, the home address, home phone number, mobile phone number, personal email, or home fax number of, and identifiable to, that individual.”   This is an important distinction to remember.

Once you outline the address or location of a person, within which a person can be placed at risk, YOU have VIOLATED THE LAW.  PERIOD.

Newsweek came under fire when writer Leah McGrath Goodman claimed to have revealed the identity of the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. Though the source of her sleuthing was primarily the public record, she was heavily criticized for her doxing by users on Reddit.

This important new policy is being proposed due to theymos' recent thread, its OP as follows:

For legal reasons, any sort of secret ID code/number that is used by the insecure legacy government/banking systems is banned from bitcointalk.org.

This includes, for example:
- US social security numbers
- Non-US government ID numbers that can cause security problems when released
- Credit card numbers

Exceptions might possibly be made if this info is absolutely essential to a scam investigation or it's very certain that you're posting secret ID codes that belong to you.

theymos penned the concern above because via the vitals outlined, peoples are at risk when such doxing info is relayed. I contend that the following is far more dangerous to be included on this forum than what theymos has provided above:

Clearly, more bodily harm can be administered to Paul Boote living at 15 Naburn Close in the UK than simply having his SSN known, don't you think? We are talking about "Non-US government ID numbers that can cause security problems when released" are we not? 15 is a number that's part of "15 Naburn Close" address. A person knowing this number-cum-address is now a security risk to Mr. Boote there in the UK, more so than just showcasing his SSN (assume Paul's an expat) where probably only financial harm action could be taken.

Hypothetical case to further illustrate why this policy needs to be implemented immediately.

Pretend that there's a person on this forum claiming to attend college and due to some unavoidable circumstances his home address was revealed. Upon investigation, it's learnt that his wife of menopause years of age living at the same address once received a ticket for driving sans a seat belt on some university campus residing at the same address. Then, via further research, it's revealed that the supposed college dude is of the same age range as the person ticketed, among myriad other important vitals.

Clearly, revealing the hypothetical information would be of great concern to individuals residing in the same household, especially if said key individual in question had a host of enemies that cares less about his SSN, DL No., etc., administered "by the insecure legacy government/banking systems".

Although we're only speakin' hypothetically, what if the info relaying is in error on some points but not others, clearly then more damage is potentially caused. Think Josh Wepman, albeit no known harm was caused, although the person in question, Josh Zerlan, now wants his SSN, et al., info expunged from this forum after he used my vitals to illegally lessen BFL's tax liability.

To recap, this forum should no longer allowed any vitals of any individual on this forum no matter who they pertain to or by whom posts such, not even their own, for clearly my vitals were used nefariously by an entity that paid big moneys to advertise on this forum, whereas I was recently banned for supposedly trolling when I was in the process of helping my case against Josh Zerlan via the supposed troll posts.

Please vote, and here's to hoping that this long overdue dialog gains traction, of which I'm sure it will.
