apart of OKCoin, btc-e and bitfinex there is not many venues to borrow bitcoin to go short, hence shorting is limited. Lots of opportunities to borrow fiat... loans, mortgages, credit cards, parents and so on...
and still more than 100.000 coins borrowed on bfx.
