Thanks for the wonderful help guys. Right now I have the bitcoin on my work machine (it's safe, I have been working there for 22 years and have my own office) on a multibit wallet.

No it's not safe there at all. If I were you I'd move it asap. If your friend or anyone else uses that computer they can send the bitcoin to where ever they want. (not saying that they will do this but just that they could if they wanted to)

That is what my coworker uses and he told me it was the best. But he also told me to get it on my computer at home and then send the bitcoin from my work computer to me home computer so I was going to do that tonight. Download the wallet at home and then in the morning I was going to send my btc home.

Is this the right way to go?

Yes it is the right thing to do but do make sure that the computer at your home is Malware free, you need to read more on how to keep your bitcoins safe and cold storage but for now moving them to your home computer should be your first priority. These links will help you:
