"A research paper completed by Erin Buckels of the University of Manitoba with the help of  two colleagues looked at how Internet trolls stack up against the Dark Tetrad.

The Dark Tetrad encompasses Machiavellianism, a willingness to manipulate and deceive others, narcissism, which is egotism and self-obsession, and psychopathy the lack of remorse and empathy and sadism,  the pleasure in the suffering of others.

"Overall, strong positive associations emerged among online commenting frequency, trolling enjoyment, and troll identity, pointing to a common construct underlying the measures," according to the paper's abstract."
