It's you, re: one of us being stupid. A stock broker is a person that recommends stocks and invests your money for you.
Online brokerages allow you to choose your own stocks and make your own trades.
If you can't tell the difference between a person who takes a commission and does your thinking for you, and a website where you do your own trades, I cannot help you.
