nobody will use it
If we believe that nobody would use the improved kernel (just like you suspect), then of course, we are not interested to buy it.
We are only interested in improvements, that would be actually useful for large amount of miners. That is why it is important for which algorithm the improvement is.
Well the small miners with a few gpu's will use it. Perfect for the nicehash miner.
The big miners already have faster private kernals, and they don't use Nicehash. They solomine/ create their own private pools.
The difference between the opensource miner and the best private kernals can be as much as 700%.
Mining on AMD with the opensource is not profitable. Mining with the private kernals is a million dollar business..
