Could someone please give me some more info as to how VNL is different from Dash? Seems like a Dash clone afaict.

Yep, you are right, Pablo.
VNL is a direct blatant clone of DASH, thats why it takes only 1 confirmation on Poloniex and DASH takes 12. Also, if you compare DASH and VNL wallet's GUI you will find, that they are identical.
