I've run 8 U3's on one R1.  I ended up splitting it across 2 R1's.  Then I went back to using a desktop since the R1's kept showing really poor averages.  Seemed like the R1 had a hard time dealing with the zombie issue too.  I just unplug and plug the zombie U3's and they come back online.
