- Decentralized and autonomous derivatives that closely resemble the value of their real-life counterparts (cryptocurrencies, fiat, or commodities).
- The derivatives are "collateralized" by main chain tokens, and come into existence when someone shorts the asset. It is complicated how SmartCoins work, see the link above.
- Unlike most cryptocurrency exchanges, you can also trade stocks and commodities.
- Transparent ledger for centralized exchanges to setup user issued assets resembling the value of other cryptocurrencies (you could do fiat or commodities as well). This also allows seamless inter-exchange trading (IE. Poloniex BTC trading against BTC-e BTC) so trading doesn't centralize on certain exchanges.

- The FIAT derivatives function much differently than Bitshares' version, a nice easy way to describe it is that they functions like the US federal reserve. Read through the link above for more information.
