Actually filing can be a lot more complicated and time consuming than simply compiling a w-2. My taxes are usually simple and I typically file early even if I don't have my w-2 yet. This year I bought some stock some of which are MLPs and I hear it's quite common to have to wait for months to get your K-1s and you might have to file for several different states; so I might be in for filing an extension myself.
