Matthew 16:1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. 2He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? 4A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.
I think this was referencing Jesus coming (the greater sign of Jonah at the time) and departing back to heaven.
Now this could be seen as a sign of Jonah through the Jonas storm, and Jonah fast, and this may point to the rapture too where people will depart.

Many of the signs of the end have been here for a long time... some of them for hundreds of years. Like as Jesus occasionally said wording to the effect of, "My time has not yet come," even so, when all the signs are present in just the right way, the end will come.
Like as every day brings a person closer to the end of his life, every day brings us all closer to the end of the world.
