Coins are never lost, the TX might become invalid (if double spend) or forgotten by the network (which would make it really easy to double spend), but the coins are never lost. A nonStandard TX is still valid, it will just not get relayed by most nodes (IIRC all latest versions of core such as 0.11.2, 0.10.3 etc.).
A few days ago I got this transaction and it's confirmed without delay: (This tx was not accepted by blockchain.info & not relayed then it's confirmed & voila).
