People gamble for all kinds of reasons
Some love the adrenalin rush and can be addicted to losing as much as winning(that's the scary part, and they usually have no control once they start)
Some people are recreational gamblers and just do it for a little entertainment(they mostly have things under control though anyone can lose control)
Some like me, I love the rush of gambling but I understand the chances of winning in most things are so low that any enjoyment I get is outweighed by the sick feeling you get after you lose. So I stick to things I have an edge in. In my case it's just poker. I know I'm better than most people I play against and can win consistently so I can somewhat enjoy the gambling aspect of it while also fueling my competitive side.
There are some who will always bemoan their luck and actually gamble expecting to lose so when they lose it's like a self-fulfilling prophecy. These are sad cases but to be honest the first 2 and this one are the kinds of people I love playing poker against
