Part of me agrees with you, but I have to put in the word for Factom. It's got a use-case that's made for ordinary users: essentially, a blockchain-powered automatic notary system. They already have the first-mover advantage.
But I'm not going to say you're wrong about NEM. I have to disclose my North-American parochiality.
