There is open account sign up through mining and some members are offering registration services for BCT contributors.  @smooth is one of the members offering this service.  Email will become a sign up option on Steemit, but we can only say that will come 'soon'.  If you register for the waiting list on steemit.com, we will let you know when it's possible.
