The problem is that there is no viable alternative to Intel. AMD has their own version of ME. Companies need to see that there is a demand for this. A Petition is a way to show Intel that there is demand for this.
The Intel monopoly needs to be broken. I would like to see more options, especially from outside the US/EU (China, Russia.etc). Monopoly can never be good. Still... the future outlook looks bleak. The other options are not up to the mark. The processors from Sun Microsystems, POWER8, ShenWei, and AMD are not as capable as the ones from Intel.

My guess is that this figures only takes the x86 processors into account. Arm processors have also been used in notebooks and Arm is trying to win some servers market share. There might be a big change in the next years, since Arm has proven that they can make high-performance highly efficient chips. The only problem is that previous x86 softwares won't be compatible so companies are not very interesting.
