Do these get flagged in a obvious way when they go bad or just show up as a empty card?
No. What happens is you some day see "card error" or "balance error" when you go to pay or check transactions on the website or the app. Just delete the card and add another. If starbucks was flagging accounts mine would have been gone 3 years ago. I have had like 6 cards die on me from other sellers.
