But, I dont understand why BTC.com bought it! They already had a running block explorer.

Money. I don't think Blocktrail gives a shit to what Bitmain does with it now, I am sure they all made a nice profit.

Money for Blocktrail. But, how does it help BTC.com aka BitmainTech ? Why did Jihan spend money on it is question to me.
