.cap / .pcap / .hccap are Packet Capture file created by packet sniffing programs.
If your wireless network adapter supports packet sniffing then, you can use a program (Wireshark, Microsoft Network Monitor, ...) to record network traffic.

The captured file helps find the password, so this guy will find the password using the file (with brute-forcing).
