it is still possible. whether from mining or from trading.
but for any of them you need a capital and some experience and you definitely can not jump in and start earning money.
you still can mine altcoins with a decent GPU. I am not an expert so I am not gonna get into that very much but you can check this board https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=160.0 and also www.coinwarz.com/ and their calculator to figure out how much profit you can make with your hashrate.
and as for trading there are many topics in the speculation for bitcoin or the Trading discussion or the speculation of altcoins boards you can check out.
also there are a lot of articles about trading available online which you can find and read about the general information about trading.
