Yeah, bitfinex hack is still out of jail, looks his life is thrilled, redeem the hack bitcoin ain't easy, maybe sell them on localbitcoin, but he will fear fbi to catch him.

If the country of hacker doesn't have law with bitcoin then he is going to be safe at all but if bitfinex is going to let this case go to fbi and they are going to file a case against him. Once he got traced by them for sure he is going to touch down the bars behind and going to be in jail. Because stealing is illegal regardless what thing is that.

Even those fbi would have a hard time to trace down those hackers on bitfinex incident since bitcoin transaction is completely anonymous, no hacker would be fool enough to leave trace and for sure he would withdraw all those hacked coins in different addresses. Back to Op's queries stealing is illegal in any way and in any matter no matter how big or small as long as you got those possession that does not belong to you even no one see you but stealing is illegal in any way.
