That's basically my biggest fear with this. Just that unknown.

TheDAO and ICONOMI are different. TheDAO had a bug in the code with lots of ETH inside and that's what brought it down. We won't nearly be that exposed as most of the funds will be kept in multiple cold wallets (and not in one giant multisig like Bitfinex had).
