I'm not objecting to betting in Bitcoin or with other bookies if/when it makes sense. But Devcon is on in China currently, if I swap money into Bitcoin to get 5% better odds somewhere else, its going to be utterly pointless if Ether goes up more than 5% in the same time frame.

I don't know about other times or sports but football in play bets, DirectBet are competitive.
