You control if you have your private keys handed.
It's useless if your coins saved at third party exchangers since you don't hold your private keys. Most of here saying that they want freedom and full control of bitcoin but in reality, most of the coins stored in web wallets or exchanges.
they put their bitcoin into web wallet to have easy access when they want to do transaction, and also when they stored in exchanger, most of them used it for trading, so most of them used bitcoin as investment not as lifetime saving
