Exactly, you must set on the things that you are going to use your money for. And I would say that just buy the things that are necessary and you really need. Don't buy the things that you just want to have it because you want it but buy the things that you really need so that you are going to manage your money properly.
really not easy to stick on the rules , first of all you need to be discipline. without discipline anything that you have planned before will just useless. once you have this discipline then you are good to go to managing money by yourself. another option you may could use a third party to manage your money such as your wife maybe? a women have a better instinct about managing money.

I may disagree with woman who are good in managing money.  Not all.  Sometimes they are the reason why you could not save your money because of their wants. Grin.  Anyways, yes it took a lot of discipline if you want to have a better management in your money.
