Question: what happens to all the sell orders that a still open on the date of December 23, 2016? Are they automatically canceled and added back to my balance? Or should I make sure I don't have any sell orders open on that day? I guess for buy orders this is not a problem in any case.

Any sell orders left in the market will just sit there until you cancel them. This would only clear the order book from your order. It will have no impact on how many final Peerplays you are holding since both account and market orders will be accounted for in the final remuneration.
