I've never been to the Philippines, but I see some documentaries on the Philippines on TV, so I can not say it's too bad to live there, but I can say that living in very poor countries is a real nightmare...

he might not be moving from US because of political reasons alone ,he would have found that it is more cheap and inexpensive to live in a third world country and being a US citizen have its perks in a third world country i guess.
