SHA256D should mean "double sha256", exactly what bitcoin uses.
Could the devs please clarify what's the difference?
If it's just how the block header is setup, it may be possible for ASICs to be adapted.

Header is longer and nonce at different place, just have a look at the miners source and you'll see the difference.

ASICs can't be used because they use a fixed length of the hash.
