Perhaps look into BitFloor.com? I believe they have multiple ways to transfer money to them (Cash Deposit into Bank of America Branch, Bank Wire, CapitalOne360 P2P transfer).
I know that I'm trustworthy, and I can provide you with some references from people who have engaged in larger transactions with me than you want so you can see that I'd have been better of stealing their money than yours. In the end you have to make a decision that you can live with.
I did try LocalBitcons.com but the sellers were still selling there BTC at a high price even after Mt.Gox prices went down and on top of that they only sold large amounts of BTC no single sales.
Have you considered putting your own ad up on LocalBitcoins.com to purchase bitcoins? Perhaps someone in your area has bitcoins to sell, but hasn't created an ad. They might contact you if they see yours.
