That makes sense. Why risk sending soldiers there when you can just get rid of the mines along with those terrorists. Now you've mentioned this I was reminded of that satellite used by a villain in an old Bond movie to clear mines to allow his army to come in more easily.
Just to remind everyone here: The Taliban was created during the late 1970s by the CIA and the other American agencies, to fight against the Soviet invasion force in Afghanistan. Back then, they were considered as heroes in the Western nations:
