In regards to running a masternode on a home computer vs renting a VPS - what are the downsides of running it on a PC at home? Is it a security issue, performance issue, or something else that makes renting a VPS a more viable option? I'm nowhere near to the requisite 25k BSD at this point, but I like to plan for the future when I can. 
You do not want to use a computer that is used for various things to be used for a MN. With each application or service that you install, you may be opening doors to intruders. This is worsened by several factors if you are running on some Windows version (especially if older or outdated). A VPS that runs a bare bone Linux with some minor network tweaks to prevent SSH brute-forcing attempt et. al. is the right way to go.
