Maybe Erdogan wants to build his own Islamic Caliphate. Democracy rarely works in Muslim countries. They prefer sharia and other medieval forms of government.

You need to remember that Turkey is not a very homogeneous society. In the Western part and the coast, the people are quite secular and opposed to Islamism. Also, in the South-east the Kurds oppose Islamism of Erdogan and his AK party. If Erdogan converts Turkey in to an Islamic Caliphate, then the West and the South-east will break away.

I read somewhere that this was a mistake for Ataturk. He moved the capital away from Constantinople to Ankara, which is in a much more religious region.

I thought Turkey already was an Islamic Caliphate...

According to religiosity polls, 99.8% of the population identifies as Muslim, and only 2% is non-religious.
Turkey is 99.8% Muslim, and their mosques are government funded... there is no separation of church and state in Turkey

Erdogan essentially elected himself dictator for life (12 more years, but he'll extend that again)

There was massive voting fraud... everything from changing laws on stuffing ballot boxes with unlawful votes, to displacing people so they have no physical mailing address and can't vote

This guy is a authoritarian dictator... he locks people in prison for making jokes about him... there is no freedom of speech in Turkey

The only worse world leader I can think of is Duterte

I live in the Philippines and Duterte is yet to go around imprisoning dissidents. All those killings though are being blamed at him. He may not have a hand in them, but his attitude towards them definitely encourages both vigilantes and police. A few days ago people are found in a police station, imprisoned in a cell hidden behind a bookcase.
