so if i was to sell zclassic now i would not be credited zencash?
i thought the snapshot was april 29th?
or do i have to ZCL until may 23rd?

That's correct. You need to wait for the fork on the 23rd. I think that was origianlly happening on April the 29th, but now is confirmed for the date you mention. This is mentioned in the FAQ section of the website:
