You can drop the HTTPS and go straight HTTP. No issues there.

Safe enough. After all, what are you trying to gain by using HTTPS? There is no logon or PII information traversing pipe. Are you really worried that some man-in-the-middle will sniff what blocks/transactions ID's your looking up?

Anyway, Moot point as the cert was updated. Go HTTPS if you wish.

That's true and now that the cert is fixed I do feel more comfortable.

if you feel comfortable then it is very good for you because your comfort level is must at your workplace.
