We shoudl be thankful XRP does not burn forests and peta-flops of processing like BTC for nothing. The purpose of mining is to establish a authentic process of creation, a poor way of doing.

Moving value around shoudl not need so much of electricity and energy. trust and a enforcing system is all required.
calculating value might use some power as it calculates ( example contract code in ethereum ) ... Moving value shoudl be as light as possible , as fast as possible, as accurate as possible and as tamper-proof as possible. Every single one Ripple ticks as right.

Ripple is pure transaction currency , it has no qualities to overtake bitcoin, but Ethereum, Boscoin, etc one of them will surely do it... because simply they are better.
