To be precise, your coins need to gain age ("mature") before they can begin the staking process. They mature without the wallet open. Once matured however, your wallet needs to be open and be in staking process to participate in staking. Once some of your coins staked (ie. you got your staking reward), they loose their age and have to wait 15 days again. Note that not all coins may stake at once.
