Ok but how do you justify a $3 fee on a $20 transaction? you never see this with banks!

the same way you justified receiving a lot of small inputs in your wallet leading to a huge transaction size.
currently you have 7 small transaction outputs each of them worth about $3 and in bitcoin you pay fees based on the size of your transaction in bytes not value you are transferring!
next time ask the service that is paying you to keep it until it is a larger amount and then pay you!
