I can see a lot of hatred directed at the Chinese in this thread. I admit that the Chinese are not angels. Some of their culinary practices needs to be either banned or modified. But what about the others? For example, shark fin soup is available in most of the American states. Do you know how painful is the practice of cutting off the fins from the sharks? And the less we talk about Foie gras, that better.
Shark fin soup is illegal in many states in the USA. Most places you see that list it list "imitation shark fin soup", though how or if they verify this I have no idea.
Shark fin soup is legal in states such as Florida. There were attempts to ban it, but the restaurant lobby managed to sabotage those attempts. And as far as I know, till now less than 10 states have banned shark fin soup in the United States (includes Texas, California, New York, Washington, Oregon, and a bunch of smaller states).
