Imagine you own a rock that is worth $2,500.

A few days later the same rock is valued at $1,800.

It is clear the value of your holdings has decreased.

I don't see what's "irrelevent" about that.

Its not irrelevant, people just want to rationalize that they aren't really losing as much money as they really are.
