Think of Bitcoin not as a ship with a wheel at the helm and an engine, but as a ship in which each sailor pushes with a paddle in order to move forward. That basically means that Bitcoin isn't Satoshi's ship, it's the people's ship. His opinion is as relevant as yours or mine.
