It is perhaps safest from your perspective just put money into BTC. I skipped BTC and went straight to LTC but that was some time ago. Personally I think the highest return is going to come from a new coin and there have been a few of those recently. Just do your own research to find out about the newer coins and make your own decision. There will be a lot of misleading people, also never listen to that chat box on BTC-e
