Has anyone ever made any significant amount from free coin giveaways or airdrops?
For me it just seems like a waste of time, but I'd love to hear from some other people who have some succes stories...

Depends how you define significant. Best i've done was getting .75 gbytes just before the round 3 airdrop in a giveaway I lucked into. With subsequent rounds of appreciation it's over 2 gbytes now, so >$1000. There were some NEM drops that netted people tens of thousands, maybe more. So it's possiblebut also not terribly likely.
As the receiver you need to be a strong holder too, cashing in quick might be nice but sure won't make you rich.

And 0.75 gbytes is really nice. I wish I were there that time
