To my large regret two my grand-dads died yet to my birth. I knew them only on the stories of the parents. The good were people. One of them participant of the second world war.
My grandfather on my dad's side was drafted in the German Army during WWII. Wait, what? My grandfather was a Nazi? Seriously, after all these years (I'm 57), I only thought of him as having serving a stint as a German soldier and not as a Nazi, just now getting enlightened (not meant he being a Nazi is/was a good thing).
Aside: I attended a high school (class '78) that only had one [younger than I] black person attending at the time. Reflecting back, I recall hearing/telling a many Jew jokes but few black jokes as kids do when young (many Dutch jokes because near town of Demotte). That said, BRB. I need to empty the ashtray in my Volkswagen.

TBC, I have no qualms with any race ... except maybe the Kardashians.
